True or False?

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from
an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in
reverse.

For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The
ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to
the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you.

This information was recently broadcasted on TV and it states that it
is seldom used because people don’t know it exists.

Please pass this along to everyone possible

    Not true. See http://www.snopes.com/business/bank/pinalert.asp

The idea of using reverse-PINs as an alarm code was conceived in 1994 and patented in 1998, but no banks have ever implemented the system. All laws to mandate such a system were either watered-down to oblivion or killed in committee.

It’s also a useless system. Assuming you can think straight enough to enter your PIN in reverse while a gun is held to your head (doubtful), by the time law enforcement arrives, the thief and you (possibly as hostage) will be long gone. An ATM transaction only take a minute, police response usually takes at least 5-10 minutes.

And if the thief sees you fumbling around trying alternate PINs, how long do you think it will be before he realizes what you’re trying to do and just shoots?

I hadn’t heard that one yet. I wonder how long it will take before that email lands in my inbox from my dad.
