Fellow geeks, lend me your ear!

OK, I am stumped. I have 4 computers at home. Three of them are connected via wire and work great. My other PC runs XP and wireless. I can connect to my router fine. I can access shared folders on my network fine. I cannot connect to the DNS server (same # as the wired machines or auto) and therefore, cannot connect to the internet. I tried pinging the DNS and have no luck. I have called Netgear (WPN311 adapter, WPN824 access point, FVS114 router) and Comcast with no satisfaction. I have also disabled windows firewall and McAfee firewall with no difference. I have used netgear’s software and windows zero config with no difference. According to either the netgear utility (95%) or WZC (4 out of 5 bars) I have very good signal. Netgear has about 4 different versions of their driver for the WPN311 and I have tried them all. The AP (WPN824) has the latest firmware loaded on it from netgear’s website. Anything else I can try or do I just live without the internet on this PC? I’ve tried EVERYTHING I can think of!!!

Can you ping anything else on the internet (by number, obviously)? Try http://www.yahoo.com (209.191.93.52) and see if that works.

If that doesn’t work then the router isn’t passing this host’s packets to the internet. Double- and triple-check your IP configuration (especially the gateway address and subnet mask) to make sure they’re correct. And check to make sure any firewall or DMZ settings on the router aren’t messed up.

I’ve probably run across something similar in the past. The only thing I can remember is at one point enabling “IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network” on a network that didn’t have authentication.

    To do that…

    “wireless network connection properties”
    “wireless networks” tab
select the network in “preferred networks” area
    click “properties”
in the new window, choose the “authentication” tab
    make sure nothing is checked.

Best I can do. Good luck.

    In response to David:
No, when i try to ping Yahoo, it times out. Why would my router transfer packets of only 3 out of the 4 machines connected? Like I said, on the PC not working, I have disabled all firewalls. I also do not have a DMZ set up.
    In response to Nobrainer:
    Nothing is checked.
Still no luck. I think I am going to wipe the HD and start all over.

    Another update:
I tried pinging the DNS servers and it worked. So I can connect to them, but still no web pages….

    Still can’t ping Yahoo either….

why are you running firewall programs when the routers perform that for you…….at least my netgear does.

  8. 8 Andrew Apr 18th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

If someone hacks my Wi-Fi, hacks my router, or spy/malware/virus infects one of the machines - it won’t get past my shared folders. Honestly, though my router has firewall, I never notice it actually blocks anything.

hmmm, I run a netgear router and AVG/AdAware/Spysweeper and don’t see anything beyond what I bring in on my own in DL’s……wierd

So I found out my PC was creating restore points about 3 times a week so I just went to the earliest one (beginning of February) and restored that point. After restoring it, running windows update and the virus scan updates. Everything is back to normal. And by normal I mean the internet works but I am back to my old problem on the PC that everyone once in a while it will crash with a device driver error. I think it is my WiFi card because I have issues with it on other PCs as well. I think netgear drivers are the absolute worse drivers in the world. Their products are nice, just their software sucks. I will have to uninstall it and config it with MS Zero config.
