That’s some pretty wild stuff. If they could adapt this to GPS units…
One day there will just be a car mount for your iPhone or whatever, and it will do this plus navigate automatically. I’m not sure I’m ready to have my iPhone drive my car automatically yet though! We will need some sort of device that can be used to communicate with other people, perhaps verbally, though – I don’t know what they are going to use for that.

Back in July, I saw this YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ps49T0iJwVg) about an augmented reality app for navigating the New York City subway system.
I love the concept and would like to see more of this – perhaps integrated into an eyeglass-mounted display (including compass/accelerometer) so it can overlay your actual vision instead of just the phone’s screen.
Something like this that overlays a car’s windshield, to point out exits, provide directions and hilight the road/lane borders when the weather’s bad would be wonderful. I’ve seen experimental versions of this on TV documentaries, but I don’t think they’re ready for public consumption yet.
A car that can drive itself? There’s lots of R&D going on, but I plan on being the last person to get one of these. I’ll wait until other people are killed by the inevitable software glitches before I trust one with my own life.
I think a HUD in a car or glasses would be a cool idea. No more trying to squint to see road signs when the sun is in your eyes or in the pitch dark. In the snow or heavy rain, you could put up the lines on the road. The government would probably mandate the current speed limit to constantly be displayed somewhere. Yeah, despite traffic I do enjoy driving so I wouldn’t get an auto-drive car anytime soon. That and the software glitch thing, talk about your OS literally crashing!
